'WHAT GOES AROUND' Comes To New York City [20.11.08]

New York, NY (Ms. RAINE INC.): What Goes Around, the critically acclaimed film tackling un-protected sex and the spread of HIV/AIDS among young Caribbean- and African-Americans, is finally coming around to the Big Apple. On November 22nd, Sunrason Films, Johnny Blacks Entertainment, and O-Don are presenting What Goes Around at Brooklyn College's Walt Whitman Theatre in Brooklyn, NY.

Directed by Steve "Tehut Nine" McAlpin, What Goes Around hits New York after a string of successful screenings in South Florida, Atlanta, Philadelphia, Washington DC, and a record-breaking debut in Toronto. The feature film explores the ups and downs of relationships, and documents the impact of promiscuity, unprotected sex, and the spread of HIV/AIDS among a group of young Caribbean- and African-Americans. Filmed in South Florida and peppered with the area's vibrant Dancehall culture, the film features new comers Sakina Samuda and Kim Goss, along with popular entertainment figures Nohard "Noah" Grant, Andrew "Flippa Mafia" Davis, Ricardo "Supa Twitch" Sanchez, David "Mavado" Brooks, Kemar "Ding Dong" Ottey, and Karl-Marx "KC Jockey" Waite.

The film also features that last screen appearance of Washington DC entertainer Alton "Rraw Dawg" Ashman, who was gunned down in his hometown before taping wrapped on the film. In tribute to Ashman, What Goes Around breaks the current trend of films targeting younger audiences by excluding any violent action sequences.

"This is a movie with a message. I purposely stayed away from making yet another violent Jamaican film," states director Steve "Tehut Nine" McAlpin, who's gritty street tale Bashment: The Fork in the Road became an underground hit in 2007. "This film is not only against violence, but it focuses on saving lives. The goal of this film is educate young Caribbean- and African-Americans about the dangers of un-protected sex."

According to the Center for Disease Control, African-Americans account for 45% of new HIV infection rates in the United States, which is seven times higher than the rate of infection for Caucasian Americans. The Caribbean People International Collective Inc., organizers of the annual AIDS Walk Caribbean in Brooklyn, NY, report that in New York, 80% of new AIDS diagnoses and deaths are among African Americans and Hispanics. According to the CPIC, Caribbean-American community in Central Brooklyn experienced a 200% increase in HIV infection rates between 1997 and 1999, and continues to have one of the highest infection rates in Brooklyn.

The CPIC also notes that among the "barriers of care" for Caribbean-Americans are the lack of knowledge about HIV/AIDS, language barriers, social stigmas, concerns about confidentiality, and cultural practices and stereotypes.

Jamaicans.com, an online community for any and everything Jamaican, lists the film as one that 'people must put on their must see list' and hails McAlpin for doing a "superb job tackling the HIV/AIDS epidemic and the stereotypes that are pervasive in the Caribbean community."

"The film has an important message about the dangers of sleeping around, the importance of safe sex, and HIV awareness," states What Goes Around leading actor Flippa Mafia. "Sometimes we don't want to heed certain things, but this film speaks to people of color, especially Jamaicans and Caribbean people on a level that they will understand and appreciate. It will open their eyes."

"It's important that people, especially young people make the right choices," states Mavado. "In these times they need all the information that they can get to make the right decision and protect themselves."

What Goes Around will be screened Saturday, November 22nd at 7pm at the Walt Whitman Theatre at Brooklyn College (2900 Campus Road) in Brooklyn, NY. Tickets are $20 in advance. To purchase tickets contact Brooklyn College Box Office at 718-951-4500. Sitting On Top Of The World [20.11.08]

The music industry’s hottest couple, Bey and Jay raked in mega dough this past year, as if it wasn’t already expected, considering the multiple million-dollar business ventures they’re both linked to.

The royal pair topped Forbes’ richest celebrity couples list, collectively making a whopping $162 million in 2008, beating out other power couples who also make big bucks.

Will and Jada Pinkett Smith took the No. 2 spot, with $85 million earned together, while David and Victoria Beckham rounded out the top three with annual earnings of $58 million, reports say.

“Naturally, powerful people tend to gravitate toward other powerful people,” clinical psychologist and celebrity researcher Jim Houran tells the magazine.

In related news, Mrs. Sasha Fierce appeared on BET’s 106 & Park Tuesday, promoting the release of her new album “I Am ….Sasha Fierce,” in which she performed the hit single, ‘Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)’. After the electric performace, Bey’ could be seen flashing her husband’s signature ‘Roc’ sign, preceded by a Heart, as she bashfully snickered at the camera.

WTF!!!! $162 million dollars in 2008 and the d@mn year isn’t even over yet. That makes Will and Jada’s $85 million look like lunch money. Congrats to both couples, though.

Check out Beyonce’s interview with Billboard when you pop open the hood…

On a brisk March day in Rahway, N.J., Beyoncé and Adrien Brody are filming a crucial scene for their upcoming movie “Cadillac Records.” The set is an old Ukranian social club that has been converted into a 1950s production studio, complete with vintage instruments and cream, perforated walls. Musicians, dressed in porkpie hats and carrying rusted saxophones, mill around the room atop a grey and rose pink tiled floor.

Dressed in an off-the-shoulder blue brocade dress, teal earrings, long black eyelashes and a frosted blonde wig, Beyoncé is channeling the fiery Etta James. Brody is playing Chess Records founder Leonard Chess in the film based on the ’50s blues label that released such greats as James and Muddy Waters. Beyoncé, as James, is about to perform “I’d Rather Go Blind” with her band when Brody, as Chess, interrupts. Rumor has it that Chess and James had a romantic relationship that never flowered because of circumstance, and Brody and Beyoncé are doing a good job of depicting that sexual tension.

“Cadillac Records” hits theaters Dec. 5, two weeks after Beyoncé’s double-album “I Am . . . Sasha Fierce” from Music World/Columbia Records hits shelves Nov. 18. It will be the singer’s third solo album and the first since she adopted a bit of James’ classic flair. “Doing ‘Cadillac Records,’ I realized that Etta James was so unapologetic, bold and strong that playing her was a big risk for me,” Beyoncé says. “It gave me the confidence and the push to challenge myself a little more with my music.”

It’s a good time for Beyoncé to be brave. On “I Am . . . Sasha Fierce,” the singer capitalizes on her established R&B fan base while stretching her pop music wings with radio-friendly tracks that she describes as “timeless.”

“I think we’ll sell 750,000 to 1 million copies [in the] first week,” says Music World head Mathew Knowles, Beyoncé’s father and manager. “I know that’s ambitious with the declining market, but Beyoncé is so focused on transitioning from pop star to icon that we’re paying attention to every single detail.”
India Arie, Gramps Getting Groovy With Music Legends [20.11.08]

Roy 'Gramps' Morgan, popular vocalist and member of reggae group Morgan Heritage, has enlisted the help of R&B and soul music heavyweights India Arie, Kenny Rogers and James Ingram for his new solo album, which is expected to be released next year. The group, known for such hits as Down by The River and Senorita, recently announced that there would be a temporary separation so its members could pursue solo projects.

Morgan explained that each member would be focusing on his or her own niche, and said his would be roots, lovers rock and a genre he dubs 'rockazz'. He emphasised that there is no animosity among the members of the group and added that they would still be performing as Morgan Heritage even while they pursue their individual projects.

A huge fan of reggae

The singer, known for his unique throaty sound, said he has been in the studio in Atlanta working on two remixes for India Arie's album, which is to be released soon. He met the I am Not My Hair singer while at an event in Atlanta and was surprised to learn that she was a huge fan of reggae music.

"I was at a venue in Atlanta and a friend told me she was there and asked if I wanted to meet her. Of course, I said yeah. So, he introduced me and her eyes opened wide and she said, 'Gramps!' She told me that the song I did with Buju, Psalm 23, was one of her favourite songs and that she loves reggae and people like Beres and Morgan Heritage," he said.

She admired his talent, he said, and immediately expressed an interest in working with him. As soon as he completed his tour and work began on her album, the two met.

Double album

They worked on a track called Therapy, which is the first single from Arie's upcoming album. The single is slated to be released in January and a video, featuring Gramps, is also in the works. Of working with her, he said, "She is amazing. One of the best vocalists I've ever heard in my life. It was a joy. There are great things in the future for her and I."

They also collaborated on a single for Gramps' album, which will be a double album. "One side will be a fun side and the other side will be a conscious side. I just want my music to touch people's hearts and to affect people's lives. The songs will be songs of comfort," he said.

Duets with Kenny Rogers, Musiq Soulchild, Ziggy Marley and the legendary James Ingram will also be featured on his album.

"These are some of the people that touched my heart and some of my idols," Morgan explained.

The album is being produced by Don Corleone and Morgan, and will be released on the latter's label, Dada Son Entertainment.

Victory In Vain [20.11.08]

TOO LITTLE, too late. Despite scoring a courageous 3-0 victory over Canada in their Group Two semi-final round match at 'The Office' last night, Jamaica's Reggae Boyz were eliminated from CONCACAF 2010 World Cup qualifying on goal difference.

Luton Shelton (28th), Marlon King (56th penalty) and Omar Cummings (85th) scored for Jamaica. Canada's Charles Gbeke had a goal disallowed in time added to the second half.

Victory in front of a sell-out crowd of nearly 40,000 pushed Jamaica to 10 points, the same as Mexico, who claimed second in the group after their 1-0 loss in San Pedro Sula to hosts Honduras, who topped the group with 12 points.

Only two qualify and with goal difference the tie-breaker Mexico, who scored nine and conceded six times, came out better at +3, while Jamaica cancelled itself out to zero after scoring six and conceding as much. All Jamaica's goals were conceded in the first round under Brazilian Rene Simoes, as he ignored the country's top talent for untried youngsters. Theodore Whitmore took over when the Brazilian was fired and led the team on a three-match winning streak.

Standing ovation

The spectators gave the Boyz a standing ovation, clapping as the referee sounded his final whistle. But the glum look on their faces told the story, along with the heads of the Boyz which drooped on the field.

In a hard-running encounter, Jamaica showed their attacking intentions from the opening whistle with captain Ricardo Gardner forcing the team forward with a dribble through midfield. Marlon King, one of three forwards employed in an attacking formation, was picked out with a pass wide of goal and centred, but the heavily guarded Canadian defence cleared its lines.

Thereafter, despite having a fair deal of possession, the homesters found it difficult to get the ball to their front men. Jamaica were not patient enough and many passes aimed through the centre of the park at Shelton, King and Ricardo Fuller were picked off.

Canada kept Jamaica honest by attacking whenever they got the opportunity, with Gbeke and Kevin Harmse running hard and creating some nervous moments for the fans. Ironically, it was this freedom that led to their downfall on Jamaica's first goal at the 20th minute, when they were caught out on a swift counter play.

Picking up a ball headed away from defence, Jamal Campbell-Ryce walked around an opponent then laid off to Demar Phillips, who broke swiftly at the centre of the defence, initiating commitment from the Canadian defenders before splitting them with a pass to the speedy Shelton. The striker rounded 'keeper Lars Hirschfield, then scored with a pass into the empty goal.

The concession seemed to fire up Canada, who went close to scoring twice within six minutes when Gbeke, with a firm header from six yards, and Harmse, with a dipping volley from 20 yards, made excellent tries, only to be denied by magnificent saves from Jamaica custodian, Donovan Ricketts.

The homesters re-established control and almost had a second goal five minutes from the interval when a cracking free kick from 40 yards by midfielder Rodolph Austin smashed on to the underside of the crossbar but, unfortunately for the Jamaicans, rebounded on the other side of the goal line.

Action was fast and furious in the second half with Canada boldly and purposefully withstanding the challenge to stave off embarrassment.

Lonely battle

For their part, the Reggae Boyz never aided their cause much as the rest of the team practically stood back from the final third, leaving the three-man frontline to fight a lonely battle.

Too often they were outnumbered and just could not beat the defence of Canada, which continued to frustrate Jamaica until Phillips provided a lively burst and took a one-two pass off King inside the penalty area, where he was felled by a late challenge.

El Salvador referee Joel Antonio Chicas signalled to the penalty spot, from which King coolly converted at the 56th minute to double Jamaica's lead.

The limited Jamaicans in attack continued to run into a wall on offence as Canada pressed deep and continued to challenge for every ball. Coach Theodore Whitmore added pace from his bench with changes from the 70th minutes onwards. They got life, and another goal, when defender Ian Goodison pushed forward and cut back a ball for Omar Cummings to slide home from goalmouth for a 3-0 scoreline.

Selectors Refuse To Side With Artistes [19.11.08]

With increased rivalries developing among dancehall artistes, it is becoming evident that some selectors are being coerced into taking sides. However, others have taken a stance against this practice, declaring that it only does more harm than good for the business.

As recent as last week at the weekly Bembe Thursdays, which is held at Weekenz on Constant Spring Road, this issue came to the fore. The event ended prematurely when Alliance selectors, Foota Hype and Boom Boom had a verbal confrontation with Richie Feelings because the selector was allegedly playing too many songs by Vybz Kartel, Mavado's lyrical nemesis.

Too many Kartels

Boom Boom denied disconnecting Richie Feelings' microphone, but openly accused Feelings of playing too many Vybz Kartel songs and not enough of Mavado's.

However, Richie Feelings said he wanted no place in the war between Mavado and Kartel and said he would not play 'diss' songs made by both artistes.

Dangerzone selector Jigsy said he does not believe the selectors should align themselves to any specific artistes if their duty is to play music to please the people.

"Artistes need we and we need the music. When a selector seh him a guh tek side inna music him a alliance himself. Every weh yuh go people waan hear all different type a artistes," said Jigsy who also had an altercation with Vybz Kartel last December.

"Mi been through it already (in reference to the period when he refused to play Vybz Kartel's songs because of their altercation). It neva affect me but the people seh mi must bury the hatchet." Bembe selector Biggy said it was important for artistes to be as fair as possible in their musical selections.

"Every selector fi neutral 'cause yuh a play fi people, not for artistes," he said. "Yuh ago have a favourite song but when yuh a deliver the music yuh just haffi be neutral."

Veteran selector Sky Juice from Metromedia was also stern in his stance.

"Sky Juice is a selector weh respect every entertainer. I don't tek sides. I play everybody music," he said.

He said there are many selectors who are close friends with artistes. As a result, he said they will play mostly the songs recorded by their friends.

"Mi nuh want no fren suh inna di business. Mi caan play no one or two set a man 'cause dat ago cause enemy. No artiste neva diss me yet 'cause inna di dance mi play everybody tune," said Sky Juice.

He said he was saddened by the state of the music and the fact that selectors are not playing music fairly.

"Dat a mash up the music and dem fi stop it. Sky Juice want love inna di music. When yuh go a country yuh haffi play everybody, a town alone dem thing yah gwaan."

Ninja Mad At Being Charged [19.11.08]

Deejay Ninjaman created a stir when he appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court on Tuesday to answer to a charge of breaching the Noise Abatement Act.

The appearance of the enigmatic artiste, whose real name is Desmond Ballentine, was enough to trigger whispers and stares. When he stood before Senior Resident Magistrate Glen Brown to respond to the allegations, he did so in his usual candid and humorous manner.

The investigating officer, Sergeant M. Harris, from the St Andrew south division, said on November 10, about 8:30 p.m., the police went to Headley Avenue in Drewsland and observed a sound system in operation. Checks were made to determine whether Ballentine, the promoter of the event, had received permission from the police to host the event.

He reportedly told the police that he had sought permission from the superintendent in charge of the division, but had received no response. It was later discovered, however, that no permission was granted. He was issued with a summons to attend court.

Ballentine pleaded 'not guilty, with explanation' and proceeded to tell the court that he was not having a dance, but rather a peace campaign. He said the event was part of his recently launched One Umbrella organisation for peace, aimed at providing intervention in troubled communities.

Stopped before it started

He said: "I talk to troubled youths. It started about four in di evening and di police stop it 'bout eight or nine. Dat time di sound not even did start play yet."

When asked whether he would be seeking an attorney, he replied: "In this case, I don't feel like I should really get a lawyer. Dis is di first I come to court for doing something good for the country. Every time before, when I come to court, is something bad, but now I was trying to do something good and trying to make a difference."

The matter is to be tried on January 14 in the night court. Before masking a hasty exit, Ballentine told RM Brown, "Much obliged, your Honour."

T.I. To Take the Stand [19.11.08]

One of two men implicated in the murder of T.I.’s childhood friend, Philant Johnson, went on trial yesterday (November 18) in Cincinnati facing multiple charges including murder and felonious assault. Authorities spent almost two years investigating the May 2006 chase and shoot out that left Johnson dead and three other individuals in the Grand Hustle camp wounded.

It wasn’t until this past summer that police caught a break, which lead to the arrest of 40-year-old Padron Thomas and 36-year-old Hosea Thomas, who stands on trial alone in the crime. The elder Thomas brother, along with two others charged with federal gun crimes, contacted officials earlier this year with details of the incident, effectively pointing the finger at Hosea as the killer.

Padron Thomas alleges, he and his friends confronted T.I. and his crew over gaining entry to the VIP area at Club Ritz in the Roselawn area of Cincinnati. Following the ensuing fight, the Atlanta-based rapper and his entourage left the scene in two vans. They were chased by a green Jeep Cherokee, from which the shots were later fired.

Padron Thomas has admitted to driving the vehicle and told authorities that his brother Hosea fired shots at the vans, one which was described as a “horror scene,” with blood and brain matter dripping from the ceiling. He also claims that at least one member of T.I.’s camp returned fire. While Hamilton County prosecutor Heather Gosselin indicated in her opening statement that the states case would “come down to witness testimony,” Hosea Thomas’ lawyer Charles Isaly pointed out that the character of those witnesses should be questioned.

He insisted that all of the prosecution’s proposed witnesses are out to paint his client in a negative light in order to obtain reduced sentences for their own crimes. Padron Thomas’ plea deal has guaranteed that he will serve no time behind bars for his part in the incident. Prosecutors have allowed him to plead guilty to a reduced charge of manslaughter, dropping the murder charges he originally faced alongside his brother. They had also agreed to allow him to serve any sentence he receives concurrently with his federal prison sentence.
TC Is Trinidad and Tobago's Next Big Thing [18.11.08]

A Trinidadian television and radio personality, who has amassed an unprecedented amount of fame across the region and certainly in the United States, is now on course to become the next big thing since Machel Montano.

The soca fraternity in T&T has been hit with a shockwave that has proven to be worth the rippled effect that it has created, for not only are the youths tuned in to the sound of the youthfully vibrant soca star impresario, but so are the promoters and all-inclusive fete lovers who avidly await the 2009 Carnival season, in high hopes of the performance that will accompany the track.

“Frontline,” which melodically and rhythmically goes in-sync with the Peter Coppin produced, Coconut Tree rhythm is the latest pre-carnival wining sensation to hit local shores and it has been written and sung by none other than Super Jigga TC- The King of Swag.

Seemingly overnight, this cultural ambassador who has for years, stood erect for the promotion and upliftment of the art-form, is now at the forefront of the stage himself, drenching the airwaves with a song that offers raunchy lyrical content, backed by the rhythm of soca champions across the region. Already a star among the teens of T&T and the region, there is no denying the fact that this former RadioActive soundman, is headed for a carnival 2K9 showcase that will leave tongues hanging and top- shotters in the business sweating from the exhaustion of just trying to keep up.

ABOUT T.C.:

T.C. has been in the entertainment business for more than ten years. Known among his peers and fans as Supper Jigga TC- The King Of Swag, this self- made superstar entered the entertainment industry of T&T as a soundman with renowned sound system, RadioActive Sounds. From there, he became highly intrigued by the businesses of music, and moved to become better informed, taking up classes abroad and subsequently returning to local shores where, along with Iwer “The Boss” George, he founded, groomed and branded Trinibashment 91.9FM- The All Soca station in Trinidad.

Since then, TC has dedicatedly produced the annual Soca 4 Summer concert series and intertwined in his vision for the promotion of the artform, he moved to invigorate and encourage the youths by producing Soca Star, a seasonal reality series that is now in its 4th season.

As the music of Trinidad and Tobago continues to rise to the occasion, there’s no doubt that TC will be on board with the flag wavers of the twin island republic, as he strives to get the voices of the nation heard and embraced.
Peetah Morgan Flies Solo [18.11.08]

MORGAN HERITAGE lead singer Peetah Morgan is currently working on a solo project with producer Shane Brown of Juke Boxx Productions. He said that his collaboration with Brown will produce songs totally different from his work with Heritage.

"I didn't want to do songs and people say it sounds just like Morgan Heritage. It's R&B with hip hop and dancehall overtones," he said.

The Morgan/Brown combination has already yielded the song Save The World, which gained favourable airplay locally.

Peetah Morgan is not the only Morgan Heritage member flying solo. Brothers Gramps and Mojo are also working on projects, but he was quick to point out that this does not mean the end of the group.

"It's something we discussed while we were on the road. We're already talking about our next project which we want to be a concept album," he explained.

Top reggae act

Morgan Heritage has been one of the top reggae acts of the past decade. Their hit songs include Don't Haffi Dread to Be Rasta and Down by the River.

The group's last album, Mission in Progress, was released this year.

King, Taylor, Williams Back For Canada Clash [14.11.08]

HULL CITY striker Marlon King, Andy Williams and Fabian Taylor are the key additions to Jamaica's Reggae Boyz squad as it prepares to take on Canada in a crucial World Cup qualification showdown on November 19. The appearance will be the first of the semi-final round for the in-form English Premier League striker.

King was omitted from the national squad by former technical director Rene Simoes for away games to Canada, Mexico and Honduras and was forced to sit out the return games against Mexico and Honduras with a lower back injury.

Looking for goals

"Well, that's the kind of problem you love to have," said interim coach Theodore Whitmore yesterday.

"We are looking for goals, Shelton, Fuller have been playing well so King will be a welcome addition to the squad," Whitmore said.

While Williams was called to the national team for the away qualifiers to Canada, Mexico and Honduras, he did not figure in the plans of Whitmore for the past few home games.

Taylor, who has had a stellar season for Norwegian club Notodden FK, is receiving his first call-up of the campaign.

Squad: Donovan Ricketts, Shawn Sawyers, Ian Goodison, Ricardo Gardner, Damion Stewart, Claude Davis, Tyrone Marshall, Shavar Thomas, Rudolph Austin, Oneil Thompson, Demar Phillips, Jermaine Johnson, Andy Williams, Wolry Wolfe, Jamal Campbell-Ryce, Jason Morrison, Ricardo Fuller, Luton Shelton, Marlon King, Omar Cummings, Dane Richards, Fabian Taylor.
Music Bug Bites Asafa [14.11.08]

The music-producing bug has bitten former 100-metre world record holder Asafa Powell.

Powell has produced a song called Trod It for upcoming reggae group Konscious, finalists in the Magnum Kings and Queens of Dancehall contest earlier this year.

The rhythm for the song was made by producer Stephen 'Di Genius' McGregor, while the production work was done by Powell.

First time producing

This was Powell's first time producing professionally and he enjoyed it.

"Honestly, it was fun because it was my first time doing this and to be in a studio with the 'Genius' (Stephen McGregor) was a good thing because he is really a genius," Powell said.

Glenroy 'Ras Solo' Barrett of Konscious said he also liked the experience.

"It was all good. We are friends from back then," he said. "But sometimes when he is training we hardly see him."

Powell said he was driven to produce the song because it was positive. In addition, he was acquainted with Barrett while growing up in Ewarton.

But music is nothing new to the sporting star. Powell said he has always been interested in music.

"My brother is a music teacher and my parents are pastors so I used to have to learn so I could play (musical instruments) in church when my brother Nigel (Powell) was not around. He is also helping me with the group. My brother taught me how to play so I can do a thing," said Powell.

However, Powell says he has no plans to become a recording artiste.

"No way," he said. "I will continue on the running track, no singing for me."

Powell said he has no immediate plans to do more producing, but said that it is something he is looking forward to doing in the future.

'Tic Toc' Controversy [14.11.08]

Deejay Busy Signal is denying claims made by an upcoming artiste that sections of the song Tic Toc were taken from one of his songs.

Smokie Benz, whose real name is Lambert Hamilton, said in an interview that some of the content for the song were taken from the song Tick By Clock that he previously recorded.

When spoken to Busy Signal following the accusation, he denied taking material from anyone's song. The deejay denied any claims of piracy. "I don't know who or what that is (in reference to Smokie Benz). All of my songs are completely original," he said.

Tic Toc is featured on his sophomore album, Loaded, and the music video for the song, directed by Ras Kassa, has been gaining in popularity.

'Tic toc' repetition

However, Benz on Wednesday said that the concept, the signature 'tic toc' repetition and even lines or phrases from Busy's version are copies of his song.

Smokie Benz said he wrote the song in January, but due to problems with the production he didn't record it until the end of March.

After voicing the song he released it along with 23 other songs on a promotional CD that was distributed in dances and on the streets. He claims the song was getting rave reviews.

Benz said, "Di song was out there. Mi burn like 50 CDs and it bad and ketching. People did love it. In September now mi a get call from all ova, from Europe and seh dem hear it and a ask how mi sell di song, so mi start check it up and realise seh is my song and everybody know dat."

Smokie Benz, who says he has been in music professionally for the last eight years, claims this is not the first time a song was stolen from him.

But Smokie Benz says he is not letting the copying of his Tick By Clock go without a fight. He explained that he has already spoken to his lawyers who will be pursuing the matter.

Clashing for Sting [13.11.08]

The feuds and diss songs from local dancehall artistes are increasing weekly, but many wonder if they are geared at creating a 'pre-Sting' hype.

In April, Monster Empire took swipes at Bounty Killer in a song called Nuh Bad Man Fi We.

In September, Queen Paula sounded her war cry at fellow deejay Spice, whom she said hurled the first set of insults.

Then, there is Einstein, who is still fuming at Vybz Kartel for an incident which occurred last year.

Merciless, who recently returned to Jamaica and the dancehall scene, has also hit out at deejays Cobra and Bounty Killer who he says have fallen off.

And, what seems to be the 'mother' of the feuds is the one involving Vybz Kartel and the Bounty Killer-led Alliance, which includes Mavado, with whom Kartel has been involved in an ongoing lyrical battle.

While not disclosing whether he is on the line up or if he will be clashing, Ninja Man said, "I nuh know wah 'cause dem fi do weh dem a do. Dis might be a time fi a man prove who is the badder man."

"Mi neva plan fi clash anybody. Dem just seh dem have somebody fi mi clash and mi just kill dem and done," said Ninja Man who has clashed with many artistes over the years at Sting, including Super Cat, Shabba, Cobra, Professor Nuts and Vybz Kartel.

Kemmar Daley- Coping With A New Challenge [13.11.08]

Two years ago, the only name on the tongues of Jamaican football fans was Kemmar Daley. That was when he was the talisman behind a resurgent Jamaica College team who were seeking to break one of the longest losing streaks in the history of Jamaican high school sport. The Hope Road based school did not win that year but all will remember the exploits of Daley with endorsements as "the future of football" ringing in from all over.

Two years on and the now twenty-year-old striker/attacking midfielder is facing a new challenge. He is now the captain of one of the promoted teams in the Digicel Premier League, Meadhaven United and has to deal with them being rooted at the bottom of the table and on top of all that he still has to deal with the implications of the sudden loss of his coach and mentor, David "Wagga" Hunt last year.

It is a task that he is up for however; as he believes that as his coach would have wanted they must rise above the challenges.

"It's kind of challenging for us as a new team. It's our first year and it's a different level of football than before." Daley said when asked about coping with life in the Digicel Premier League.

Speaking of his coach he affirmed: "Today we honoured him with a memorial but the match didn't turn out as we wanted it to. We just have to take this league one day at a time and we will get there."

From humble beginnings, Daley does realize the important role football has played in this life. "It's a thing from birth. The talent runs in the family, but it's about trying to survive and making it," he mused. "I watch a lot of football and I know that there is talent all over the world and in Jamaica, especially in the ghetto. But we have to try to make it better for our family."

Knowing this, Daley sees the sky as the limit and looks to God as the arbiter of his future: "I want to go as far as possible but I am gong to leave everything to the Almighty."
Hudson Family Posted Up At Trump Towers [11.11.08]

Donald Trump has allowed the Hudson family to reside in the Trump Towers during this difficult time they are going through:

The real-estate mogul has been housing Jennifer Hudson and some of her relatives at the Trump International Hotel & Tower free of charge. “She’s a great girl. And we’re protecting them well,” Trump told PEOPLE at a benefit honoring Australia director Baz Luhrman at the Museum of Modern Art Monday night. “They are very safe.” Hudson has been seeking refuge at the Trump holding since her mother, brother and nephew were murdered in Chicago on Oct. 24.

The Hudson family couldn’t ask for a kinder gesture from relative strangers. We still need to continue praying for the Hudson family because these new developments are probably making it harder for them to cope.

Gayle Confident Ahead of Fortune Cup [10.11.08]

The West Indies Cricket Team arrived in Abu Dhabi with one goal in mind. Get the better of Pakistan in the three One-Day Internationals and take home the Fortune Trophy. It will be the first time Windies play at the 17 000-seater Sheikh Zayed Cricket Stadium and they will be looking to make a huge impression.

Captain Chris Gayle spoke at the official series launch and unveiling of the Fortune Trophy at the Abu Dhabi Cricket Club. He expressed confidence that his players will do all – individually and as a team -- to improve their positions on the International Cricket Council’s rankings.

“We believe we can do well against Pakistan in Abu Dhabi. This is our first time (here) and the Team is eager to do well on foreign soil. We believe this could be the start of a very good away tour. Pakistan is a good cricket team and it will be a challenge for us, but we will be fighting hard against them all the way,” he said.

The 29-year-old Gayle, whose powerful batting is expected to be a boost at the top of the order, also indicated that in addition to himself and the experienced players -- Ramnaresh Sarwan and Shivnarine Chanderpaul -- this series is a great opportunity for some of the younger players to establish themselves on the team and in international cricket.

Team Manager Omar Khan indicated that the team settled in well.

“The players have settled very well and we are eagerly looking forward to the upcoming matches. This is a major opportunity and the players are aware of what is required,” Khan said.

The day/night matches will be played on: Wednesday, November 12; Friday, November 14 and Sunday, November 16 and bowl off at 3 pm (7 am Eastern Caribbean Time/6 am Jamaica Time).
Jah Cure’s new album, “THE UNIVERSAL CURE,” [10.11.08]

Jah Cure’s new album, “THE UNIVERSAL CURE,” his first recorded album since his release from prison, is scheduled to be shipped worldwide in November, 2008. The first single off that album, “Hot Long Time,” featuring Flo-Rida, Mavado and Jr. Reid, was recently released in the Caribbean. This collaboration is the first of many for Cure. The album contains collaborations with several artists, crossing the reggae, hip-hop, Latin, and R&B genres. Another single, “Mr. Jailer,” will be released from “The Universal Cure” album in the U.S. and Europe in September, 2008. Another track from the album, “Journey,” is also on the reggae compilation album, Jouney Riddims, now available worldwide on iTunes.

Cure was already on his way to becoming an international success when his life took a radical turn in 1998. He was stopped and arrested late one night in Montego Bay and charged with crimes, all of which he denied. He has maintained his innocence to this day all through his arrest, trial and incarceration. A non-jury trial was convened, where Cure’s defense lawyer based his case on “Identification vs. Recognition” case law. Unfortunately, based on one victim’s claim that he sounded like one of the perpetrators, Cure was sentenced in 1999 to 15 years in prison.

After serving eight years in jail, Cure was released from prison on July 28, 2007. His goal now is to spread love and to promote peace and healing, universally through his music. He believes his incarceration was Jah’s way of teaching him humility, kindness, forgiveness and love for his fellow man. Consequently, he has forgiven all those who have done him wrong, and all those who have judged him unjustly and unfairly.

Cure was born in Hanover, Jamaica on October 11, 1978. As a young man, he’d sneak out of his bedroom window late at night to visit local dance halls and stage shows. He also attended the annual Reggae Sunsplash in his community, where he saw the great Reggae icons performing: Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Burning Spear, Beres Hammond, Marcia Griffith, Garnett Silk, Yami Bolo, Jacob Miller and Black Uhuru. By the age of 11, he made the decision to become a part of that elite group -- becoming a reggae star and an icon was his dream and his sole mission. Initially using the name “Little Melody,” Siccaturie began his musical onslaught on the public. He soon became the talk of Jamaica and was well on his way to success. His voice started to leave an indelible impression in the streets, and at the age of 15, he moved to Kingston, where he met Capleton, Sizzla and Jah Mason. Little Melody was about to fulfill his dream.
MORE AWARDS FOR MACHEL MONTANO [10.11.08]

NEW YORK, NY - Soca superstar Machel Montano has been busy fusing soca rhythms with well, everything else, but he still manages to bring home the bacon with a slew of new awards that honor his contributions to soca music, with more to come before the year is out.

Montano spent most of the year sampling different genres and collaborating with the likes of Busta Rhymes, Lil Jon and Pitbull, but he still sticks to his formula of native calypso and soca beats, and based on this year's awards count, the fans and music industry still consider him the most talented and acclaimed soca artist today.

In two recent soca music awards ceremonies held in the United Kingdom and Caribbean, Montano was awarded 10 of the top prizes. In April, he walked away with the top prizes at the International Reggae and World Music Awards (IRAWMA) in New York, totaling three that night. With the Trinidad & Tobago's COTT Awards in early November, Montano is up for another three of those prestigious songwriting distinctions.

The entire HD camp is also riding the wave of awards, as songbird Patrice Roberts, songwriter Kernal Roberts, solo artist Farmer Nappy, and producing mastermind Dwain "Dwaingerous" Antrobus, have all been nominated, awarded and are still up for more prizes before the year is out.

Now the HD band and crew prepares for their highly anticipated performance at the World Creole Music Festival in Dominica on November 2, 2008, where Montano and crew will join Sean Paul and others to celebrate 30 years of independence in Dominica.

Here's the list of new awards for Machel Montano:

Cherine Lives The Life She Imagined [07.11.08]

When I was about seven years old, I wrote a list of things I wanted to achieve and places I wanted to visit in my lifetime and placed in on my wall. I didn't obsess about the list; it was just my imagination and daydreams taking me from my childhood reality of a one-bedroom home shared with my parents and two sisters in Nannyville Gardens, Jamaica. While I couldn't even identify some of the locations on a map as a seven year old, I created a mental picture of them and for some reason even felt like there was a spiritual connection with these places. While my list of goals was long, my original list of countries to be visited was really short; there were three: Australia, Japan and India.

I was blessed with the opportunity to study and live in Japan for a whole year, and that experience made me realize how big this world really is. It's weird when you go to a foreign country. You are suddenly pushed to not only define who you are, but you also take on the added responsibility of being a flagship for your country. I loved Japan. I loved the language, the food, the technology, the 'quiet', the fashion, the people, and I loved how independent it made me!

Fast forward to 2008, and here I am sitting in my hotel room in Perth, Australia, bringing another country (and continent!) from my childhood dream list into reality. What was supposed to be just a tour has turned out to be an amazing experience. I've just realized that in one trip I have been able to travel to more states in Australia than even some native Australians have, which is kinna crazy. When I learned that I would be touring Australia at first I thought, "Ok, I've heard of Sydney and Melbourne," but that's pretty much all I knew. I've always had a fascination with Aboriginal art (and I learned from my driver in Sydney that there are messages and sometimes stories behind the dots that are on the many paintings). I decided to buy my nine year old niece a Rainmaker Didgeridoo that is painted and crafted in the traditional dreamtime colors depicting native Australian styles. The lady at the store told me it's meant to bring rain, so I guess when we have droughts in Jamaica, my niece will have it handy and she'll just make it rain.
THE RETURN OF MAGNUM KING AND QUEEN OF DANCEHALL: "BIGGER AND BADDA" [07.11.08]

The success and talent of past contestants have made the sponsors increase the total cash prize to One Million JA Dollars each for the King and Queen.

Following its premier on TVJ in January 2008, the much-anticipated Magnum King and Queen of Dancehall delivered on its promise of creating a new chapter in the history of dancehall music in Jamaica. Blessed with critically acclaimed status, Magnum King and Queen of Dancehall is ready for the launch of its second season with the expectation that is will bring fresh new talent from all sections of Jamaica to the masses.

Season two will herald its launch on Monday November 10 with the debut singles and videos of the first Magnum King and Queen of Dancehall winners: Singer Jah and Baby Tash.

The success and talent of past contestants have moved the sponsors to increase the total cash prize to One Million JA Dollars each for the King and Queen and the chance to work with a top producer for a single and a video. If that wasn't enough, the producers of Magnum King and Queen of Dancehall have also created a management agency called Real Jam, which the contestants will have the option of signing with.

Winners of the first Magnum King and Queen of Dancehall, Singer Jah and Baby Tash have had much success since becoming Magnum King and Queen of Dancehall 2007/2008. They performed at several stops on successful Magnum road shows in the summer of 2008 spanning the length and breadth of the island from Kingston to Montego Bay with bumper crowds at each venue. The road shows featured the top ten finalist of the 2007/2008 competition including Wescalado, Doginal, Senita and Mona Lisa. Jamaicans were satisfied with a combination of Magnum Tonic Wine, the sexy provocative lyrics of Baby Tash and Singer Jah's lyrical prowess.

Mark Kenny, Executive Producer of Magnum King and Queen of Dancehall spoke on the success of the first season: "The first season was a huge success; it was phenomenal with superb talent and exceeded our expectations…there isn't much more to say except we're expecting a higher turn-out at the first auditions come November 15 and a bigger and badda show for the rest of season."

The first audition for the 2008/2009 Magnum King and Queen of Dancehall will take place in Montego Bay on Saturday, November 15, when once again the search starts for another Magnum King and Queen of Dancehall.

Magnum King and Queen of Dancehall emerged unlike any other competition in Jamaica creating equal opportunity on stage for both male and female contestants, at the end of the show two winners emerged: one King and one Queen, a first for Jamaica. Mark Kenny noted that market research has proven that the competition has surpassed its target group and has attracted viewers between the ages of 15 and 45: "We had set our target audience between 18 and 35, however our market research showed a wider demography of viewers of the age group between 15 and 45."

For the second time Magnum King and Queen of Dancehall returns and Riddims and lyrics will fire as the prospective princes and princesses will compete in the second season for the top prize of two million dollars and more.

Magnum King and Queen of Dancehall Season 2 is sponsored by Magnum Tonic Wine, and will begin airing on TVJ starting January 2009.

Soca Community Mourns Byron Lee's Death [05.11.08]

The soca community is mourning the loss of 'The Dragon', Byron Lee, who died yesterday after losing his battle with cancer.

Lee had been fighting transitional cell cancer and was being treated in Florida. However, he was later diagnosed with bladder cancer two years ago and returned to Jamaica by air ambulance on Saturday, October 25, where he was being treated on the Tony Thwaites Wing at the University Hospital of the West Indies. He died yesterday at the age of 73 surrounded by his family and close friends.

As Jamaica mourns his loss, so too does the soca community in the Caribbean. Soca princess Destra Garcia has known Lee for the past 10 years and said his death is a great loss to the music fraternity.

"His music has been a great influence, especially on the ragga soca style and he's a legend and I know he will live on for years and years," she said. "For the young persons who did not know him through experience like me, they will know him through his music."

YES! HE DID - Obama Makes History [05.11.08]

Democrat Barack Obama wrote his name indelibly into the pages of United States history Tuesday night, engineering a social and political upheaval to become the country's first black president-elect in a runaway victory over Republican John McCain.

The 47-year-old Illinois senator, son of a white mother from Kansas and an African father from Kenya, mined a deep vein of national discontent, promising Americans hope and change throughout a nearly flawless 21-month campaign for the White House.
Immaculate Head Girl Dies [03.11.08]

Just a few hours after her 18th birthday, Pia Phillips' life came to a tragic end. The teenager was killed by a bullet from her father's licensed firearm after he attempted to save her and her mother from gunmen.

Phillips, who was head girl at Immaculate Conception High School, was returning home from choir practice with her mother when tragedy struck.

Her family would not comment on the incident, but the pall of gloom that hung over their home spoke volumes.

Pia's sudden and unexpected death has left her friends and schoolmates traumatised and the many tributes posted on her Hi5 page bore testament to this.

One friend wrote, "Pia ... my God. How me a guh deal wid dis. But I love yah and will miss you. Rest in peace."

Another post read, "Pia phoned us on her birthday. She was happy and excited ... and look now we all won't see her again but we all love an will always remember u so RIP."

Police say about 7:30 p.m., Phillips and her mother arrived at their Riverside Drive home in Havendale, Kingston 19. As they were about to enter the house, a red car pulled up. Two men, both armed with guns, exited the car and demanded that they come to them.

Both screamed and ran and Phillip's father, after hearing the disturbance, pulled his firearm and rushed to his family's rescue. He, however, reportedly slipped and fell and the gun went off, hitting Pia, who was crouched by the grille. The attackers fled.

Pia was taken to hospital and admitted in serious condition, but succumbed to her injuries yesterday while undergoing surgery.

Reggae artist Gyptian predicts "Black Son Rising" [03.11.08]

Fresh from the release of his album launch in New York, Gyptian predicts a change in the American political arena on November 4th with the recording of his most recent song "Black Son Rising" on the Evening Breeze Riddim produced by Chiney K Productions.

Recorded in August 2008, Gyptian speaks prophetically of a black son rising, and says that it comes as no surprise to see this change come as it is destined. Because of the lyrics to the song, many people have attached it as a song in support of Barack Obama.

"People who have listened to this chune say it is perfect in support of Barack Obama, and his platform of change," says Chin from Chiney K Productions. The riddim itself is not traditional Reggae as it is rooted with latin guitar instrumentation, and a mild Reggae baseline, giving the music an international flair.

Known for writing and performing romantic and melodic ballads, Gyptian is best known for his hit singles "Serious Times", and "Beautiful Lady". Gyptians latest album, 'I Can Feel Your Pain' was released on October 21st, 2008 on the VP Records Imprint.
