| SHOCKING NEWS: Comedian Bernie Mac Died Last Night [09.08.08]

Comedian Bernie Mac died this morning in Chicago after a long hospitalization from pneumonia.
Mac, whose real name is Bernard McCullough, passed away early this morning at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. He was 50 years old.
His rep just issued the following statement to TMZ: "Actor/ comedian Bernie Mac passed away this morning from complications due to pneumonia in a Chicago area hospital. No other details are available at this time. We ask that his family's privacy continues to be respected."
The day before he died, Mac's rep insisted he was stable, in no danger and expected to be released within the week, even though it was clear Mac was on his death bed. |
| Machel Montano Conquors Crop Over [09.08.08]
|

Soca superstar Machel Montano brought the excitement and thus the masses to the annual Crop Over celebrations in Barbados, last week. First with the bMobile EnVy concert on July 26, followed by the Brian Lara All-Inclusive Fete on August 2, then performing to a sold-out crowd at Cohobblopot on August 3, and finally hitting the street parade for Grand Kadooment on August 4, Montano was the face of Crop Over this year.
Cohobblopot, a national cultural event, is the premiere concert of the Crop Over season, and after suffering low turnout in recent years, the Barbadian government turned to the top name in soca, the Southern Caribbean's most popular genre, to bring the masses - and that he did. "I'm delighted to come to Barbados to celebrate Crop Over, even though it meant skipping Caribana in Toronto, because four members of my band are from Barbados and so it means a lot to be able to come home and celebrate with them," states Montano, who saw his very first headlining performance at Crop Over this year.
Backed by the HD Band and featuring sizzling performances from members of the HD family - soca sensation Patrice Roberts, Farmer Nappy and Zan, Montano received overwhelming roars from the screaming audience when he also brought on surprise guests - rapper Lil Jon, reggaeton star Pitbull, and Jamaican dancehall group TOK.

| Jamaica lead Caribbean charge at Olympics [08.08.08]
|

Propelled by a tremendously strong Jamaican track-and-field outfit, the Caribbean Community is well placed to bag at least a dozen medals at the games of the 29th Olympiad.
When the 'smog' clears, the expectation is for the region's medal haul to be within the range of its previous most successful Olympics in Australia eight years ago.
CARICOM landed 12 medals at the Sydney 2000 Games, a figure boosted to 15 subsequently with the elevation of several Caribbean athletes to medal status after the demise of American drug cheats.
The immense quality of runners representing Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago (T&T) and The Bahamas guarantees huge prominence for the Caribbean in the sprints and all the relay events.
Usain Bolt and Asafa Powell, the fastest men in history, are the media's most sought-after competitors on the Olympic roster here, and the two Jamaicans' clash with American World Champion Tyson Gay in the men's 100 metres is the premier event on the Olympic schedule.
Powell held the 100-metre world record from June in 2005 to May this year when Bolt ran a blistering 9.72 seconds to erase his Jamaican colleague's mark of 9.74 seconds.
Bolt and Powell are joined in their 100-metre bid by several other impressive Caribbean speed men, including veteran Kim Collins, the 2003 World Champion-ship gold medallist from St Kitts and Nevis, Bahamian Derrick Atkins, who beat Powell while placing second to Gay at the Osaka World Championships last year, and T&T's 2003 World Champion-ship silver medallist Darrell Brown.
Add to them, T&T's Richard Thompson and Marc Burns, who are among the top 10 fastest in the world so far this year, with times of 9.93 and 9.97 seconds, respectively.

| VIBE 15th and JayZ's Blueprint 111[08.08.08]
|

Jay-Z’s appearance on this month’s VIBE cover for the 15th Anniversary Juice Issue comes following the recent announcement of his upcoming album the Blueprint III, his last album on Def Jam.
Music journalist/author and VIBE contributor Elliott Wilson interviews Jay-Z for this month’s cover story as he joins the mogul on tour for a five-day trip across the UK. Wilson grills the rapper/businessman with 15 questions about his life and career – from the breakup of Roc-A-Fella, to his support of Barack Obama, to his alleged marriage to long-time girlfriend Beyoncé Knowles.
Jay-Z on supporting Senator Barack Obama: “What [Obama] represents is, we as a people are part of the American Dream…We were left out of the dream at a certain point. Now the dream is, you can be anything – and it’s not cliché.”
Jay-Z on Lil Wayne: “You should embrace the next generation…I think he’s really a fan of mine. I think he really loves the sh-t that I’ve done…The public has him in line next, and for me to say he’s not in line next would be foolish.”
Jay-Z’s response when asked to confirm his marriage to Beyoncé: “I just think it’s really a part of your life that you gotta keep to yourself…You have to have something sacred to you and the people around you…I shared so much of my life…I should have something to hold on to.”

| Kanye West speaks out on some issues [08.08.08]
|

The concert which is part of his Glow in the Dark tour was wrapped with a speech where he addressed how harsh people has criticized the young rapper. "How is Soulja Boy killing hip-hop?" Kanye shouted out to the crowd. "He had one of the biggest songs of the summer. If anything, he's helping keep it alive. You don't have to be Lil Wayne in order for people to say your sh** is fresh." He also emphasized on the need to accept diversity, adding "Open y'all's f***in' minds. Be accepting of different people. Let people be who they are."
West then clarified his statement by taking an example from his own experience. He said, "You know how many people came at me, calling me 'gay' cause I wear my jeans the fresh way? Or 'cause I said, 'Hey, dude, how y'all gonna say 'f**' right in front of a gay dude's face and act like that's OK?' That sh** is disrespectful." He continued, "It took me time to break out of the mental prisons I was in. The stereotypes of the fear of the backlash that I would get for believing in what I believe in, for accepting people for who they are."

Titled Infallible, the 21-track album will be Stephens' 7th opus, following closely on the heels of her final VP Records disc Rebelution, which was released two years ago. Tanya's other albums were Too Hype, Ruff Rider, Big Tings a Gwaan, Gangsta Blues, and Sintoxicated which was for Warner Music Sweden.

| Barbados Cropover Road March King: Edwin Yearwood [06.08.08]
|

They call him 'The General' and Edwin Yearwood once again led his troops to victory, securing a krosfyah hat-trick when he won Tune-of-the-Crop today with Handle Yuh Business.
Yearwood's fourth Road March title added to the People's Monarch title he won last Thursday with the same song and the Party Monarch victory bandmate Khiomal won last Sunday with Unleash the Beast.
"You never know what to expect because Road March tends to go some funny ways sometimes. It feels cool that we can share that vibe once again with Barbados like it used to be," said the Road March king who now has a tally of ten titles - four Road Marches, five Party Monarch crowns and one Pic-o-de-Crop victory. He painted his victory as one for the krosfyah family, saying:
"I am extremely proud especially for krosfyah and definitely more so for Khiomal because a lot of people see him as the "Robin" not necessarily as the "Batman" but he is one of the most determined and Dedicated young people. But outside of that I am really proud of krosfyah because so many times people write off the band saying krosfyah is done and every year God gives us the gift to write some beautiful music and put it out there so that we keep coming back."

| Barbados Cropover 'GRAND JAM ' [05.08.08]
|

IT WAS HOT! HOT! HOT!
But the scorching sun did not prevent costumed revellers from having a grand time as Barbados' biggest street party climaxed yesterday.
Twenty-five bands paraded at the Rotherley Construction Grand Kadooment between the National Stadium and Spring Garden Highway, but while some bands attracted more than 1 000 members, others barely scraped a handful.
But this did not stop the jamming!
Although some observers commented that revellers lacked energy during the parade at the Stadium and the costumes lacked creativity, the pace picked up as bands travelled along the route.
Clad in skimpy costumes, the revellers seemed to create more heat as they jumped and wined with gay abandon to some of the season's popular calypsos.
Costume designers also utilised more earth tone colours such as orange and gold, and pastel hues of indigo, blue and green were also dominant.

| ATI 'missing in action' [05.08.08] |

In terms of excitement, Saturday night at the ATI weekend parties did not live up to the previous nights.
The food aspect of MIA was the most disappointing of the ATI parties, all of which were food and drink inclusive. At minutes to midnight, soup was just being served and a flock of persons swarmed the serving area to partake. Shortly after, food was served but in very small quantities, which only served to upset the patrons.
An all white party, MIA was promoted, during the day, as the place to be on Saturday night. However, it took a long time for patrons to get there and, when they did, their visit was short-lived as they soon left for the neighbouring Rhythm and Booze.

| Gay: I'll be ready for Olympic 100m showdown [05.08.08] |

World champion Tyson Gay says he will be fit to take his place on the blocks as he bids for 100 meters glory at the Beijing Olympics next week.
Gay, who clocked an astonishing 9.68 seconds in a wind-assisted effort at the U.S. trials, damaged his hamstring as he stumbled in the 200 meters heats at the same meeting.
It left the 100 meters as his only individual event at the Games and raised fears that he would not be fully fit to challenge Jamaican stars Usain Bolt and Asafa Powell in an eagerly-awaited showdown.
But Gay has no doubts he will be ready for the start of the 100 meters on August 15.
"When I step on the line in Beijing, don't worry. I'll be ready to go," Gay told the Associated Press before departing for China from Munich, Germany.
He has decided to fly to Beijing and skip going to the U.S. track team's training camp in Dalian because he wants be at Friday's opening

Lately, stars like Kim Kardashian, Rihanna and Jamie-Lynn Sigler have been sprucing up their style with black and white fashions. The trick to making the basic look (a skirt and tank) all your own is choosing the right accessories. While Kim used a patent leather belt to emphasize her famous curves, Jamie-Lynn added pizazz with a flashy metallic clutch. And of course, the always edgy Rihanna opted for a studded cuff and gladiator pumps.

According to The Associated Press, Mississippi Highway Patrol spokesman Sgt. Ben Williams said Freeman was driving a 1997 Nissan Maxima belonging to Demaris Meyer of Memphis when the car left a rural highway and flipped several times shortly before midnight Sunday.
"There's no indication that either alcohol or drugs were involved," Williams said, according to the AP. Both Freeman and Meyer were wearing seat belts, Williams reported. The woman's condition was not immediately available.
Freeman was airlifted to the hospital in Tennessee.
"They had to use the jaws of life to extract him from the vehicle," Clay McFerrin, editor of Sun Sentinel in Charleston, Mississippi, told the AP. "He was lucid, conscious. He was talking, joking with some of the rescue workers at one point."

| Comedian Bernie Mac, is still in Very Critical Condition [04.08.08] |

The revelation came after Mac’s publicist told media on Saturday that she had received multiple calls from news outlets regarding “absolutely untrue” rumors of the star’s demise.
“It is a very horrible rumor,” publicist Danica Smith said. “It is absolutely untrue. Nothing has changed from yesterday.”
The 50-year-old south suburban resident’s hospitalization was reported Friday. His publicist said then that the “King of Comedy” was admitted for pneumonia but was responding well to treatment, and should be released soon.
Smith also said she didn’t know when Mac, whose real name is Bernard McCullough, entered the hospital. She said the pneumonia was unrelated to Mac’s sarcoidosis, a chronic disease that can inflame tissue, particularly in the lungs. Smith said Mac’s sarcoidosis has been in remission since 2005. |

| It's Bolt at the double [03.08.08] |

Usain Bolt will run the sprint double at the Olympic Games in Beijing, China, his coach Glen Mills confirmed yesterday.
Bolt had expressed his interest in running both events at the August 8-24 Games, but said he would leave the decision up to his coach.
"He will run both," Mills said in a statement, ending weeks of speculation over the issue.
The plan at the start of the season was to focus on the 200 metres, a race Bolt won a bronze medal in at the World Championships in Osaka, Japan last year.
However, things took off for the lanky sprinter in May when he produced three sub-10 clockings in the 100-metres, including a world record of 9.72-seconds.

| The Cost For THREE Gold Medals [03.08.08] |

It will cost more than $16 million to fuel Jamaica's expectations of winning at least three gold medals at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, China.
This amount covers airfare, outfitting the athletes, staging a pre-Olympics camp in Tianjin, as well as a small per diem (allowance) for athletes, according to Mike Fennell, president of the Jamaica Olympic Association.
Fennell admits it is a hefty sum, but argues that "it is money worth spending". In fact, the bulk of the financing will come from sponsors, including Digicel, Singer and Puma.
Jamaica has sent a 57-member team to carry the country's flag in Beijing, where the eyes of the world will be focused on the 29th Olympiad from August 8 to 24.
Fennell says the cost of getting each athlete to Beijing is approximately US$4,000 (J$285,000). Airfare, which is approximately US$2,500 per person (J$178,125), accounts for the lion's share of the cost.
HOW THE MONEY IS SPENT
$178,125
Airfare per athlete attending the Games
$8,550
Daily cost per athlete at pre-Olympics camp
$1,781
