Bolt wins Olympic gold in world record style [16.08.08]

Usain Bolt smashed his own world record in winning the Olympic 100 meters title in Beijing with one of the most remarkable performances in the history of track and field.

The 21-year-old Jamaican clocked 9.69 seconds to win from Trinidad and Tobago's Richard Thompson (9.89 seconds) and America's Walter Dix (9.91 seconds).

But it was the manner of his victory that was truly astonishing as he started his celebrations before crossing the line, showboating with his arms out wide before slapping his chest in triumph.

He was still comfortably inside his own world mark of 9.72 seconds set in New York in May when he came to wordwide prominence as a gold medal contender.

Bolt's great Jamaican rival and former world record holder Asafa Powell finished a disappointing fifth while America's world champion Tyson Gay failed to make the final as he finished fifth in the earlier semifinal round.

Bolt, who will now be hot favorite to complete the 100-200 double, told BBC Sport that he expected to break his own record..

Asafa Powell Nike Zoom Aerofly [16.08.08]

Nike and Asafa Powell today debuted the Zoom Aerofly. The Zoom is suppose to be one of the most technologically advanced and lightest weight track and field kicks of all time. Powell reportedly worked very close with Nike in designing the sneaker to fit his running style....
Rohan Marley Breaks Silence On Lauryn Hill [16.08.08]

"Whatever Happened to Lauryn Hill?"

Marley offers answers to that often asked question.

"She loves, being with her children, seeing them grow and instilling our teachings of righteousness to them," the 36-year old former college football player explained. "[She does] what regular people do: She cooks, shops, goes to restaurants, regular things ... She became more in tune with the earth."

Hill, the former front-woman of the chart-topping, groundbreaking hip-hop trio, The Fugees, did not go off on the deep end, as many believed -- even after a series of odd appearances, most notably her 2001 'Unplugged' album (which caused 'Los Angeles Times' music critic to refer to her as "unhinged."). Down and depressed? No," Marley maintained.

The couple, who Marley says is "spiritually together," has five children: sons Zion, 11; Joshua, 6; and John, 5; and daughters Selah, 9; and a still unnamed seven-month-old.

Hill, herself, declined to comment for the 'People' magazine article – which seemed to have come from out of nowhere. But fellow Fugees members Wyclef Jean and Praz Michel was quoted throughout.

OLYMPIC SWIMMING: Phelps' Home Stretch [16.08.08]

That was the dominant feeling for what happened at the finish of the men's 100-meter butterfly final this morning at the Water Cube as Michael Phelps preserved his quest for eight gold medals in swimming by the smallest of margins.

The electronic timing board flashed Phelps in 50.58 followed by Serbia's Milorad Cavic in 50.59.

In his closest race by far, Phelps used one final condor stroke to touch the pad millimeters ahead of Cavic, a former Cal Golden Bear who threw a major scare into the celebrated American's carefully mapped out plan for eight gold medals.

So close was the finish - one-hundredth of a second - that Serbian officials were considering whether to file a protest. Slow-motion replays showed just how close it was at the end.

"Maybe shaving your fingers," Cavic said when asked to express what could have made the difference on the touch. "My coach, Mike Bottom (former Cal assistant coach) brought some clippers and cleaned my neck. He shaved the hairs below my cap. Who knows? If he didn't do that, I might have gone 50.60."

Phelps touched the wall in an Olympic record 50.58 seconds for his seventh gold medal to tie the record haul of Mark Spitz from the 1972 Munich Olympics.

Usain Bolt Jogged to Victory in Quarter Finals [15.08.08]

Usain Bolt ran the fastest 100-meter sprint in China even after slowing to a jog midway, laying down a marker for today's Olympic semifinals and a potential final against Asafa Powell and Tyson Gay.

Bolt, the world-record holder, cruised to victory in his quarterfinal heat in 9.92 seconds. The 6-foot-5 Jamaican looked to both his left and right to check the competition after passing the halfway mark and relaxed his arms.

``I just ran the first 50 meters, then I looked around to make sure I was safe and shut it down,'' Bolt, 21, told reporters at Beijing's Bird's Nest stadium.

Bernie Mac and Isaac Hayes: Last Film Togther [13.08.08]

In a sad twist of irony, Bernie Mac and Isaac Hayes will both share their last moments on the screen together. They will make their final appearance together in new movie Soul Men, along with Samuel L. Jackson, due for release in November.

The Malcolm D. Lee film tells the story of two estranged soul-singing legends (Jackson and Mac) who agree to participate in a reunion performance at the Apollo Theatre to honor their recently deceased band leader.

Bernie Mac plays Floyd in the film and Isaac Hayes plays himself.

As a note, the cause of Isaac Hayes death has not been released. Rest in Peace to both...
Facebook Walls Spreading Viruses [13.08.08]

Usually walls are used to keep things out, you know, like the wind, or bugs, or barbarian invaders.

Ironic, then, that Facebook’s iconic Wall, the thing that helped to set it apart from MySpace and grab a huge share of the online social networking space, is actually being used by some to spread malicious software capable of turning your machine into a zombie, so that others with bad intents can control it and make it do their bidding online.

The “attack” is actually rather unsophisticated — just a link posted to the wall to a site that supposedly has a video of, what else, a celebrity caught in a private moment doing naughty things with a special someone. Naturally the site doesn’t have any such video, just a fake version of the Flash plugin that is actually the malware itself. You’re prompted to install it to view the video and, once installed, your machine is theirs for the taking.

So, as always, be careful where you click, keep your virus scanner up to date, and only install plug-ins like that from official sources, like Adobe.com.

Sean Paul Gets Irie, Gets Busted in Sweden [12.08.08]

Singer Sean Paul has been popped on drug charges at -- where else? -- a reggae concert in Sweden this weekend. Smoke 'em if you got 'em!

Swedish cops tell us Paul was brought from the huge Uppsala Reggae Festival to a local police station on suspicion of possessing narcotics. We hear 200-300 people also were brought in from the Fest this weekend, also on drug-related charges.

In addition to concertgoers, police say ten (!) artists performing at the show also were hauled in for questioning -- they later were released.

Cops tell us they have sent all "evidence" to a lab for testing, and will have results in a month.
Chris Brown and sweatheart Rihanna spotted in Barbados [12.08.08]

SHUT UP AND SKI! Barbadian pop star Rihanna and her close friend R&B singer Chris Brown were at the beach at Paynes Bay St. James, yesterday evening having fun on jet skis. Rihanna and Brown slipped into the island Sunday. Despite attempts to throw the local and international media off their trail by leaking information that they had already left the island, the couple was spotted on the West Coast beach.

The two have been constantly spotted together and have been linked romantically for months. This is not the first time that they have been on the island together, but neither would confirm reports that they are "an item".

Riot Erupts After Teen Shot By Police In Montreal-North, Canda! [12.08.08]

CBS Canda reports " The mother of an 18-year-old shot and killed by a police officer is demanding explanations from the Montreal police force. But people in the neighbourhood where Fredy Villanueva was fatally wounded weren't waiting for explanations Sunday night. Their fury erupted into a riot in Montreal North, with knots of protesters roaming the streets and setting fire to cars and garbage barricades.

The riot police squad was called out, and hundreds of officers formed a perimeter four or five blocks away. Rioters vandalized a fire station and set several cars outside ablaze. The firefighters were evacuated. A building near the fire station and community centre burst into flames shortly after 11 p.m. Onlookers cheered as a van went up in flames. Police said one police officer was injured, but there was no immediate word of arrests. Phalanxes of white-helmeted police officers patrolled the streets and the park where Villanueva was shot.

'I just don't understand why the police took my son's life,' Lilian Villanueva said Sunday as tears streamed down her face. Her son, Fredy, died in hospital Saturday night after a confrontation with officers near Henri Bourassa Park. A police statement said officers felt threatened by Fredy, his brother Dany and a number of friends, which is why they reacted with force.

But Fredy's sisters said they couldn't figure out how anybody could have felt threatened by their younger brother. 'He was shy. He wasn't the type of guy who would antagonize a police officer,' said Julissa, 25. 'He didn't like clubbing or drinking beer. He was a quiet guy. He liked to stay in.' The family is still trying to piece together the events that led to Fredy Villanueva's death. The Surete du Quebec, which has taken over the investigation, remained tight-lipped about the incident."
Mr. Vegas shines at Reggae Rising [11.08.08]

Mr. Vegas has been quite busy on the entertainment circuit. Performing in locales throughout the world, this stronghold dancehall artist is always anxious to thrill fans. And last weekend, he did just that --- taking his show on the road to the 2nd Annual Reggae Rising Music Festival (produced by People Productions) in the northern tip of California.

It was a special weekend for Mr. Vegas and his ensemble as they touched down on the picturesque setting, which included a remarkable backdrop of the Eel River. Much different than they anticipated, the eclectic Reggae Rising Music Festival was one to be rivaled. With three performance areas, outdoor camping and loads of special treats and concepts uncommon to most festivals, the three-day event played home to a thorough line-up of Reggae artists and thousands of revelers.

Although they went through planes, trains and automobiles to get to the event, it was very much worthwhile in the long run. At the festival on Saturday, August 2, Mr. Vegas shined -- delivering a 60-minute impressive set of numerous hits. But the most exciting element of the performance was High Energy dancer Boricia, who enticed the crowd as she moved to the pulsating beats. She enjoyed displaying the latest dancehall moves just as much as the crowd embraced her. Additionally, background singer Nicole Miller blazed during her solo performance. Her sultry vocals mesmerized the sea of fans.

Mr. Vegas was joined by other top Reggae acts, including Sly and Robbie, Lexxus, Junior Reid and none other than Jamaica's beloved crooner Beres Hammond. In just a few weeks, Mr. Vegas will be off to toast it up in Africa.
