Bolt cruises in 200 at London GP [26.07.08]

LONDON -- Easing up and still easily winning, Usain Bolt is looking like he's right where he wants to be going into the Beijing Olympics.

The 100-meter world record holder from Jamaica got off to a fast start in the 200 on Saturday at the London Grand Prix and won in 19.76 seconds.

"I came out here with a plan and I did execute that well," Bolt said. "My coach, no doubt, will tell me what I did wrong. I just came here to work on my 200 and I did just that today."

Wallace Spearmon of the United States was second in 20.27 and Paul Hession of Ireland was third in 20.37 at Crystal Palace.

Bolt is one of the favorites for both the 100 and 200 at the Beijing Olympics, even though he has not yet decided to run in both races next month.

"I'm still not sure about Beijing. I'm still waiting to see what's going on," Bolt said. "I'd definitely like to double. I think I could do well in both."

Bolt set the 100 world record of 9.72 seconds in May, breaking the 9.74 mark of Jamaican teammate Asafa Powell.

"I'm just looking for consistency and to do what my coach says," Bolt said. "I'm managing to do that right now.

"I'm definitely ready," Bolt added. "I've been ready for two months now."

'I am in the best shape' [26.07.08]

LONDON, England (CMC):
Jamaican Asafa Powell clocked 9.94 seconds and easily won a competitive men's 100 metres at the Aviva London Super Grand Prix track and field meeting yesterday.

Three weeks away from the start of the athletics competition at the Beijing Olympics, Powell beat Trinidad and Tobago's Marc Burns (9.97) into second spot, with Jamaican Michael Frater (10.00) third, in a Caribbean sweep of the top places.

The field raced against a headwind of -0.5 metres per second and Powell was fairly satisfied with the outcome.

"The race did not quite go as expected, but felt easy. A bit more work to do and everything should be fine for Beijing," he told reporters.

Jay Z Out Shines Lil Wayne on his album CARTER III [25.07.08]

After selling 1 million copies of "Tha Carter III" in its first week of release, Lil Wayne is unquestionably the most popular rapper around today. However, his self-proclamation of "best rapper alive" is up for debate, since the guest verse from Jay-Z on "Mr. Carter" ironically outshines both from Lil Wayne.

That said, Wayne's unique delivery paired with Jay's strong presence make for a double whammy of star power, with the former eager to prove he's capable of living up to the hype alongside the former Def Jam president reminding everyone of his own rap legacy. It's actually refreshing to hear the two hugely successful, credible artists still sounding as hungry as unknown rappers trying to get their big break.— Shad Reed
Jamaica's 'Compatriot' Games - Bolt ready to face Powell in Beijing [25.07.08]

USAIN BOLT is ready to go up against Asafa Powell in the 100-metre sprint at the Beijing Olympics, even if he hasn't yet decided to run in both that race and the 200.

Bolt, who took the world record in the 100 from Powell in May, lost to his Jamaican teammate at that distance on Tuesday in Sweden.

"I'm always ready do anything," Bolt said yesterday, a day before the London Grand Prix opens. "Physically, it's going to be hard on my body, but I've been doing the work preseason and I'm ready to do the double."

Bounty Killer will not 'Sizzle' [24.07.08]

Last week, 'The Doctor' had extended an invitation to Bounty Killer and Mavado to attend and perform. "Mi really want Mavado on the show and it woulda nice if Killer come too," he said then.

Yesterday, Bounty Killer's manager, Julian Jones-Griffith, shot down any chance of both invitees attending Beenie Man's Sizzle. "He's got another engagement that same night," Jones-Griffth told THE STAR. When pressed for details on where Bounty Killer would be performing on the night of August 6, Jones-Griffith would only offer that his artiste would be performing "overseas".

50 Cent sues Taco Bell in NY over ad campaign [24.07.08]

50 Cent has sued Taco Bell, claiming the fast-food restaurant chain is using his name without permission in advertising that asks him to call himself 99 Cent.

The rapper says in a federal lawsuit filed Wednesday that the Mexican-themed chain features him in a print ad asking him to change his name to 79 Cent, 89 Cent or 99 Cent. His real name is Curtis Jackson.

The rapper's court papers say the ad is part of Taco Bell's "Why Pay More?" campaign, which promotes items for under a dollar, including Cinnamon Twists for 79 cents, Crunchy Tacos for 89 cents and Bean Burritos for 99 cents. The papers say the Irvine, Calif.-based company sent a bogus letter requesting the name change to the news media but not to the rapper.

The rapper's lawyer, Peter D. Raymond, said his client didn't learn about the letter or that he was featured in the ad campaign until he saw a news report about it. Raymond said his client is seeking $4 million in damages.

Asafa Powell beats Usain Bolt in Sweden [23.07.08]

Usain Bolt just couldn't catch up in time.

Powell capitalized on Bolt's weak start and edged the world-record holder by one-hundredth of a second, leading from start to finish in the 100 meters at the DN Galan meet on Tuesday.

Powell, the former world-record holder, won their highly anticipated rematch in 9.88 seconds. Bolt, who was slow out of the blocks, nearly caught his fellow Jamaican at the finish line. Third went to Norwegian Jaysuma Saidy Ndure in 10.06.

"I was really happy with the race," Powell said. "My goal was to win. My start was quick and fast. And the speed stayed with me through the finish.

"I'm really looking forward to the Olympics."

The win was a measure of revenge for Powell, after losing to his close friend Bolt at Jamaica's Olympic Trials last month.

Bolt set the world record of 9.72 in New York on May 31, breaking Powell's mark of 9.74.

It was Powell's third straight win at Olympic Stadium. Last year, he won in 10.04. In 2006, he set the stadium record of 9.86.

"I needed today's win for my confidence," Powell said. "That is most important in order to get really good times."

Bolt was somber.

"I'm disappointed," he said. "My start was not good enough. That was the key tonight. I was also disturbed by the false start. I could not focus at 100 percent."
Lil Wayne: The Best Rapper Alive [23.07.08]

Lil Wayne has a smoke-scarred rasp that makes him sound like Redd Foxx covering Bob Dylan. It's hardly the voice you'd expect from a 25-year-old rap star, but then, it's been a busy 25 years.

Born Dwayne Carter Jr. and raised in Hollygrove, a New Orleans neighborhood famous for producing soul singers, Wayne signed his first deal at age 11 after rhyming on a record executive's answering machine. At 12, he distinguished himself by starring as the Tin Man in his gifted middle school's production of The Wiz--and by accidentally shooting himself in the chest with a .44-cal. while imitating Travis Bickle in his bedroom. After teenage years that were lost to the comically awful gangsta group Hot Boys (like 'N Sync with shivs), Wayne went solo and undertook a transformation almost unprecedented in hip-hop. Over four years, he morphed from a mediocre rapper with a thuggish point of view into a savant who merges sex, drugs and politics with a sneaky intellect, a freakish knowledge of pop culture and a voice out of the Delta. Whether Wayne is, as he claims, the "best rapper alive" is no longer even debated in hip-hop or commercial circles. Since June 10, when his latest album, Tha Carter III, sold 1,005,545 copies in its first week, he's been the undisputed champ.

Rick Ross tries to deny being a Prison Guard [22.07.08]

Apparently desperate to distance himself from any affiliation with law enforcement, the rapper Rick Ross has recently denounced as fake photos purporting to show him in a former career as a Florida prison guard. But Department of Corrections (DoC) records show that Ross, whose raps detail the Miami gangster lifestyle and his supposed days trafficking cocaine, did, in fact, work as a correctional officer for 18 months. Ross (real name: William Leonard Roberts) was appointed a prison guard in December 1995 at a salary of $22,913.54, according to the below personnel record, which was provided to TSG by Jo Ellyn Rackleff, a DoC spokesperson. The rapper's social security number is identical to that of the jail guard. According to the official document, Ross was earning $25,794.34 when he resigned in June 1997.
